Dr. Jane Bonbright

Founding Executive Director of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO)

Jane M. Bonbright, Ed.D. is Founding Executive Director of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO). She earned her Doctorate in Education from Temple University. Jane has dedicated fifty years to the field of dance performance, education, research, administration, and dance arts advocacy at national and state levels in the USA. She began her career as a professional ballet dancer and toured America and Europe with major ballet companies. Thereafter, she taught for thirty-five years in professionally oriented training academies, PreK-12, and postsecondary education before entering dance arts administration.

Dr. Bonbright served as President and Executive Director of the National Dance Association before becoming the Founding Executive Director of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) in 1998.  Here she worked to establish dance as an art form in U.S. education and strengthen dance arts programs in postsecondary education, private studios and schools of dance, community/cultural centers, and outreach programs of performing arts organizations. To this end, she networked with over 100 federal, state, and local arts and education organizations and agencies; and established the NDEO business model ensuring NDEO preserve its core values but stimulate growth and expansion in dance.

Dr. Bonbright believes strongly in equal access and opportunity to quality dance education for all, the importance of standards-based education, the need for quality pedagogy in teacher preparation, and cutting-edge professional development. She is currently Director of the NDEO Online Professional Development Institute (OPDI) which now offers 30 courses in dance content and pedagogy 24/7 to dance educators and administrators at national and international levels. Dr. Bonbright is the recipient of NDEO’s Presidential Citation (2017), NDEO’s Lifetime Achievement award (2009), Congress of Dance Administrators Alma Hawkins Award for Excellence in Dance Education (2007), the Congress on Research in Dance’s Outstanding Research in Dance Research award (2003), and others.   

Dr. Lauralee Zimmerly

Idaho State University, USA

Dr. Lauralee Zimmerly is a Dance Educator who uses teaching and research as a natural extension of her love of choreographing and performing. She hails from California where she received a Masters degree in dance choreography and performance from UCLA (University of California Los Angeles).  Her doctoral degree is in educational leadership with an emphasis in instructional technology from Idaho State University.  She was honored by The National Dance Association (NDA) as the 2011 University Dance Educator of the Year.  Dr. Zimmerly has been an artist-in-residence for the San Joaquin County school district, a member of New Dance Company in Stockton, CA from its inception, a founding member of Contemporary Dance Alliance in Albuquerque, NM and a performer for Sor Maria Productions in Santa Fe, NM. In Pocatello, Idaho, she has worked with Kinetikos Dance Alliance, STB Dance, Co-Exhibit, Brindusa-Moore Ballet, and EXTEND Dance, as well as working independently as a choreographer, teacher, and performer.  In 2012 she implemented Movement Enriched Curriculum – A Dance Education Program that explored the connection between movement and learning in local elementary schools.  She is currently a faculty member in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho where she has served for eighteen years.  She was the Artistic Co-Director of I~MOVE, The ISU Modern Dance Company and has choreographed for productions in the Theatre and Music departments, and for Dance ISU.  She was a visiting lecturer at University of Malaya Cultural Center for the summer of 2013.  She has been the choreographer for the ISU Summer Community Theatre productions of HONK!, The King & I, Anything Goes, and Oliver.

Pusat Kreatif Kanak-Kanak Tuanku Bainun

Format of Conference:

The conference will be held from 09:00-18:30 for a total of two and a half-day at the Pusat Kreatif Kanak-Kanak Tuanku Bainun, Kuala Lumpur.

 

Presenters will be given 20 minutes to deliver their papers, followed by a 10-minute Question and Answer session.  Each session will run for 1 1/2 hours and consist of three papers presented consecutively for a total duration of 60 minutes with a Question and Answer section for the remaining 30 minutes.  A moderator will be appointed amongst the paper presenters to moderate paper sessions.

About ICONDE 2018

Organizer & Curator

This conference will be convened and curated by Nusantara Performing Arts Research Centre (NusParc), co-organized by The Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) and My Dance Alliance, in collaboration with The National Department for Culture and Arts, MOTAC. 

 

Nusantara Performing Arts Research Centre (NusParc)

NusParc is a non-profit organization, which awards grants to individual scholars for research and documentation in the traditional and contemporary performing arts of Southeast Asia. The mission of this organization is to support and stimulate research and documentation of the performing arts of Southeast Asia (Nusantara).  Through its support of scientific research, documentation, publications and financial assistance to scholars, NusParc intends to promote the preservation and the nurturing of traditional and contemporary performing arts, including music, dance, theatre and proto-theatre genres throughout the Southeast Asian region.  This includes providing educational materials for use at all levels of teaching and for the public at large.

 

Faculty of Music and Performing Arts (FMPA), Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI)

The Faculty of Music and Performing Arts in UPSI offers a growing range of programmes and degrees in music, theatre and dance.  These highly regarded degrees are offered at Diploma, Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral levels.  The Faculty of Music and Performing Arts cherishes the diversity of local and global musical and performing arts traditions.  It has world-renowned and specialist teachers and researchers in a wide range of music and performing arts styles which are targeted to meet the needs and expectations of professional working in the current global market.  Courses offered encompass the rich and diverse range of Malaysian traditional and contemporary music, dance, theatre.

 

MyDance Alliance

MyDance Alliance was registered in 2001 with the mission of bringing together a community of dance practitioners and dance enthusiasts that supports and promotes dance in Malaysia with the aims of forming a network organisation that links dance enthusiasts locally and internationally by supporting and promoting the many forms of dance that exist in Malaysia (cultural, traditional, contemporary, ballet or commercial) through the following:

  • education and training

  • performances

  • dance related publications

  • research and documentation of dance

  • dance related conferences

  • engaging in international exchange programmes

Based on the World Dance Alliance Networks model, MyDance Alliance has established five specialised Networks to focus on specific aspects of dance.  They are:

  • Education & Training

  • Research & Documentation

  • Creation & Presentation

  • Management & Promotion

  • Welfare & Status

In the context of the three collaborative parties, NusParc will provide professional assistance to the collaborating partners to host the said conference in collaboration with The National Department for Culture and Arts, MOTAC.
